食を生む重要な場

ロンジェ琉球風水アカデミー、学長の横川明子です。

沖縄は、14世紀に中国（当時の明）と朝貢関係を結びました。琉球王国は、中国から様々な影響を受け、それを自国に取り入れいます。豚トイレは、当時交流の深かった、福建省から伝わってきたものです。琉球風水を研究していると、電気、ガス、水道がまだなかった時代、いかに自然と調和して、持続可能な暮らしをしてくかを考えていたことに、心をうたれます。

伝統的な琉球民家では、豚トイレが広く利用されていました。琉球民家のトイレを風水の視点から、解説します。

風や水の流れで問題解決

伝統的な琉球民家の敷地内では、トイレはプラベート空間に配置され、敷地の左手奥にありました。方角的にみれば、母屋の背中が北側（北東・北・北西）であることが一般的ですので、トイレは北側や西側のエリアに配置されていることが多かったはずです。

季節風を配慮したトイレの臭い対策

琉球民家のトイレの配置は、風水の視点から、とても大きな意義があります。夏の心地よい風は、主に南、南西から吹きます。一方、冬には、北や北東から厳しい季節風が吹き込みます。この位置にトイレがあると、夏の風、冬の風、どちらから風がきても、トイレの臭いが母屋に流れてきません。沖縄独特の風の性質と向き合うことで、トイレの臭いの問題は緩和されていました。

敷地の高低差を利用した適切な排水への配慮

琉球風水では、敷地の高さが、北側と東側が高く、南側と西側が低いことが理想とされていました。敷地内の水は、北東から南西に流れるため、母屋の下には水が通りません（新聞記事内の図を参照）。また、傾斜がゆるやかにあることで、不要な水が適切に排出されました。当時のトイレはもちろん水洗ではなく、主に豚トイレが取り入れられていました。大雨が降っても、汚物を含んだ水が母屋に流れ込んでこない位置にトイレが配置されているのがわかります。

風水が盛んだった中国福建省では、豚トイレが使われていたようです。豚小屋と一緒にトイレを作り、人間が糞をすると豚がそれを食べるという仕組みです。豚はやがて人間の食料となりました。また、豚の糞は堆肥として作物に与えます。完璧な循環型の生活が出来上がっていました。沖縄にも今から約600年前に豚が福建省からもたらされ、豚トイレも一緒に使われていました。沖縄では豚便所のことを「ワーフール」とか「フール」と呼び、戦前まで使っているところもあったようです。王朝時代の豚トイレは、明治時代に県令で禁止されいていることもあり、現存している民家でほとんどみかけることはありません。

豚トイレは排泄の場でありながら食を生む場

豚トイレで重要だったのは、豚が大切な食糧源であったことにあります。人は水と食べ物が無くては生きることができません。食べ物があるところには神様を祀り、感謝と食が絶えることが無いように祈りました。豚トイレは、排泄の場でありながら、食を生む場でもあったため、今のトイレ以上に重要でした。特に、伝染病などの病気が発生すれば、家族が体調を崩し、その上、豚が死ぬことになれば、食糧源が絶たれます。そのため、清潔にすることが必然的に要求されました。

トイレは人体に例えるとお尻（肛門）

風水では、住宅を人体に例える考え方があります。玄関が顔、口であるとすれば、トイレはお尻や肛門に相当し、住人の健康運に影響すると考えます。不要になった老廃物が出て行く場所であり、玄関から入った財運の出て行く場所でもあります。対角線上にあったり、動線が長いなど、玄関からトイレができるだけ遠くにあるほうが、財運や健康運が家全体に行き渡り、吸収されやすいと考えます。

執筆を終えて

豚トイレは中城村の中村家にありますので、執筆前に実物は過去にみていますが、今回の調査では、読谷村の琉球村へも行ってきました。琉球民家は、ただ見るだけですと、「ふ～ん」で終ってしまうのですが、風水の視点から観察していくと、「なるほど！」と、うなるものがあります。今月のコラムをお読みになったら、是非、琉球村や中村家に足を運んでみてくださいね。
